Step-By-Step Guide to Changing A Tyre

3 Mins read

When you encounter a flat tyre, knowing how to change a tyre can save you time, and money. It may seem like hard. This is not true. You can finish the task just by following few simple steps.

Let’s walk you through how to change a tyre. So, let’s get started.

How to Change A Tyre

Step 1: Find a safe location: If you experience a flat tyre while driving, slowly and safely pull over to a well-lit and flat area away from traffic. Engage your hazard lights and apply the parking brake.

Step 2: Gather the necessary tools: Retrieve the spare tyre jack, lug wrench, and any additional equipment from your vehicle’s trunk or storage area. These tools are usually provided by the manufacturer and are essential for changing a tyre.

Step 3: Loosen the lug nuts: Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tyre. Make sure that you put force in a counterclockwise direction. Please refrain from removing the nuts at this juncture.

Step 4: Position the jack: Consult your vehicle’s manual to locate the appropriate jacking points. Place the jack beneath the car’s frame or designated area, ensuring a secure and stable position.

Step 5: Lift the vehicle: Use the jack to raise the vehicle until the flat tyre is just off the ground. Avoid lifting it any higher than necessary.

Step 6: Remove the lug nuts and flat tyre: Fully unscrew and remove the lug nuts, setting them aside in a safe place. Carefully pull the flat tyre off the wheelbase, keeping it upright to avoid damage.

Step 7: Mount the spare tyre: Align the spare tyre with the wheelbase and gently push it onto the wheel studs until it is fully seated. Ensure that the valve stem is oriented towards the outside.

Step 8: Secure the lug nuts: You need to start by hand-tightening the lug nuts. Then, use the lug wrench to fully tighten them in a clockwise direction, applying firm pressure. Avoid over-tightening, but ensure they are snug.

Step 9: Lower the vehicle: Slowly lower the jack until the spare tyre touches the ground. Remove the jack. Subsequently, reinsert it into your vehicle.

Step 10: Tighten the lug nuts: Use the lug wrench to give each lug nut a final tightening, ensuring they are secure.

Step 11: Check the tyre pressure: Confirm that the spare tyre is properly inflated by using a tyre pressure gauge. If needed, adjust the pressure to the recommended level.

Step 12: Replace the tools and flat tyre: Put the lug wrench, jack, and any other equipment back in your vehicle’s storage area. Secure the flat tyre in the trunk, taking note of any special instructions for repair or disposal.

Step 13: Get your tyre repaired or replaced: Remember, the spare tyre is only a temporary solution. Schedule an appointment with a professional. They can repair or replace the flat tyre in no time.

How Long Will It Take to Change a Tyre?

The time it takes to change a tyre yourself can vary. There are several factors. They include your experience, the condition of the tyre and tools, and any unforeseen challenges you may encounter. However, with a little bit of practice, you can change a tyre quickly.

When Should You Replace the Tyre of Your Vehicle?

Car tyres should be replaced under the following circumstances:

  1. Treadwear: One of the most common reasons for tyre replacement is excessive tread wear. Most tyres have tread wear indicators, which are small rubber bars located in the tread grooves. When the tread wears down to the level of these indicators, it indicates that the tyre needs to be replaced.
  2. Age: Regardless of tread wear, tyres should be replaced after a certain period of time due to aging. It is recommended to replace tyres every 6 to 10 years. This is true if your tyres are in good condition. Rubber deteriorates over time, leading to decreased traction and potential safety hazards.
  3. Damage: Tyres should be replaced if they have significant damage such as cuts, punctures, bulges, or sidewall cracks. These issues can compromise the structural integrity of the tyre and increase the risk of a blowout or loss of control.
  4. Tread depth: In addition to tread wear indicators, you can also use a tread depth gauge to measure the depth of the tyre’s tread. If the depth goes below a certain threshold, you need to replace your tyres.
  5. Uneven wear: If you notice that your tyres are wearing unevenly, it may indicate a problem with the wheel alignment, suspension, or tyre balance. In such cases, consider replacing the tyres if the uneven wear is severe or cannot be corrected.
